MY JOURNEY AS A DIALYSIS TECHNICIAN : 3 YEARS OF MY PROFESSION
My journey as a Dialysis Technician : 3 years of my profession
When people think about the medical line or healthcare , they often picture doctors or nurses . But many other professionals work hard to keep patients alive long . One such profession is Dialysis Technology. I have been working as a dialysis technician for more than 3 years and through my blog I want to share my experience- good, bad , heart touching, disappointing, depressing everything.
My journey in this profession wasn’t I had planned since childhood. I wanted to be a nurse but life led me here. I had one year gap after my higher secondary. I was depressed during those times . My sister admitted me to a course, named Dialysis Technician which I never listened to before . I was good at studying and completed my diploma in Dialysis Technology sincerely .
To become a dialysis technician , one needs proper training. I completed my diploma in Dialysis Technology before stepping into this profession.
The training covered:.
• The basic function of the kidney and how dialysis helps patients .
• How to operating Dialysis machine and understanding the procedure
• Dealing with patient with kidney failure — physically and mentaly
• Managing complication during dialysis and after dialysis ( like DDS, low blood pressure, hypertension , blood clotting, hemolysis , hypoglycemia, infection etc )
• How to clean the machines and room after dialysis to protect from infection.
After completing my theory training I started taking an internship from our nearest hospital . In the real-world experience started there . After completing my internship I started a job in krishnanagar. From the second week of my job started, the experience was different .
A day in the life of a dialysis technician —
Many people even some patients don’t realise how much work goes into dialysis treatments . A typical day is included for me —
• Preparing the bed and Dialysis machines before patients arrive.
• Checking patients vitals (like blood pressure , weight , temperature , saturation , pulse rate)
• Starting and monitoring dialysis treatment and ensuring that the machine runs correctly throughout the treatment.
• Checking blood pressure every 30 minutes .
• Handling emergency situations like hypertension, dizziness , muscle cramps , DDS etc .
• Preparing the tray for the patient dressing .
• Cleaning and monitoring dialysis equipment after each session .
• documenting everything patient reports , machine settings and observations .
• Cleaning the machines for the next patients .
• oparating the ro plant
A dialysis patient lasts 4 hours per patient , and I handle multiple shifts .
And I think being a dialysis technician is more than just a job — it’s a responsibility and I am a part of that team It makes me proud .
